Prehnite Specimen

Description

Prehnite was named in 1788 by Abraham Gottlieb Werner in honor of the Dutch Colonel, Hendrik von Prehn. Von Prehn is credited with finding the mineral in 1774 at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. It is unknown how he came across it.

It is a phyllosilicate mineral that can be found around the world. It’s colors can range from a light yellowish-green to a deeper olive green. It often forms in cavities of volcanic rocks and is mostly made up of calcium, aluminum and iron and potassium.

This prehnite specimen is 2.6″ x 2.25″ x 1.3″.
