Libyan Desert Glass is the remaining evidence of a tremendous asteroid or comet impact with the earth. It is found in the eastern Sahara Desert between the towering dunes of the Eastern Sand Sea of Egypt.
It is nearly pure silica, which requires temperatures above 1,600 to form, and it is hotter than any igneous rock on Earth. Studies show Libyan glass, also know as Libyan Gold Tektite formed about 29 million years ago.
