The Aletai meteorite was first discovered in 1898 in Xinjiang, China. It is one of the largest known iron meteorites. At least five main fragments have been found weighing in total a mass of 74 tons. It got the name Aletai after the Altay Prefecture in Northern Xinjiang where most of the fragments were found.
